- The Great Online Research Challenge is a free, nationwide contest for high school juniors and seniors, giving them a chance to win $80,000 in prizes, including four-year scholarships to Florida State University. Registration for the GORC began January 1, 1998. All entries must be received by 11:59 PM EST on January 31, 1998.
- LMS Academic Village for Kentucky library media specialists contains information on using Web search engines.
- KSMA: Kentucky School Media Association page includes calendar, professional development, and Internet resources.
- Cyberbee explores many topics helpful to librarians and teachers using the Internet. Topics include: use of electronic citations, copyright for educators in the information age, tips for webmasters, and curriculum ideas.
- The Read In!, online reading project, will be April 24, 1998. There will be authors online to chat about their books and answer questions about their careers. Register to participate.
- ICONnect gives school library media specialists, teachers and students the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to navigate the information superhighway.
- Buildings, Books, and Bytes: Libraries and Communities in the Digital Age study "compares library
leaders' visions for the future with the public's prescriptions for libraries, derived from public opinion research that forms the backbone of this study." Using libraries as a focal point, it provokes much thought about how institutions that provide public information will be impacted by the digital revolution.
- MultiMedia Schools is a practical how-to magazine that addresses multiple technologies used in K-12 schools today--CD-ROM, multimedia, online, and Internet resources. Articles, columns, news, and product reviews are contributed by practicing educators who use new technologies in the classroom and media center. The Internet columns are designed to help teachers
integrate Internet resources into the classroom curriculum.
- School Librarian Links is meant to be "an all-in-one reference site for school librarians new to seeking professional resources on the Internet." At present it is a list of selected pointers sorted by topic. Topics include acceptable use and censorship (including several acceptable use policies of middle and high schools), best education sites, curriculum links, librarian resources, online text/news, publishers and vendors, U.S. government search sites, and search engines. Each link is accompanied by a short annotation. This is a good starting point for a school librarian or media specialist who is new to the Internet.
- Librarian's Guide to Cyberspace for Parents and Kids online brochure from the American Library Association is designed to help parents understand the internet. Includes a short glossary, recommended sites, guide to selection, internet safety tips and opportunities to send questions.

Directories and Searchable Resources
- The Wordsmyth English Dictionary-Thesaurus (WEDT) is a full dictionary AND a complete thesaurus, integrated into one work, with over 100,000 entries and 50,000 headwords. The Wordsmyth site will be sponsoring participatory projects to expand and build upon the usefulness of this reference process.
- eBig is a free website in Technology and Learning from Britannica. It contains over 65,000 websites that have been
reviewed by Britannica for validity and authenticity.
- webCATS is a page of library catalogs which can be searched via the Web. webCATS is arranged for searching geographically, by type of library, and by library catalog vendor.
- Online Dictionaries is an index to online dictionaries. An easy and painless way to lookup a word in various Internet dictionaries and access the definitions.
- Roget's Thesaurus Online is an electronic thesaurus that works like the real thing: You enter a word, and you get LOTS of shades of meaning, each of which links to LOTS of words.
- Online version of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations has to be the easiest way yet to find an appropriate quote. Just log on, enter the appropriate word or phrase, and bingo, you've got a list of quotes to match.
- Libweb list of library WWW servers Libweb provides links to over 600 library home pages around the world.
- School Libraries on the Web: A Directory is a listing of all school libraries in the United States and other countries which have web pages.
- The Electric Library is a complete archive of over 1,000 publications. Users can enter a plain English question and search a collection of magazines, over 150 newspapers, books, photographs, maps, and Compton's Encyclopedia.
- At MediaFinder you can request free information from a searchable database of newsletters, magazines, journals and catalogs. More than 5000 listings in 265 subject categories.
- LibraryLand is a great catalog and index of library-related resources on the Internet.
- Encyberpedia by Monte Crises is a site that aims to create a ";living"; Enclyclopedia on the Web. On the main page there are links to specific subareas (sports, maps, news, medical, and live video from around the world). There is also a ";subjects index"; where you can quickly locate a region of interest to you in areas more related to information taught in schools. This is a site that works well for people who want to browse various subject areas.
- CM: Canadian Review of Materials
is a weekly online journal that reviews web sites, books, videos, audiotapes and CD-Roms for children and young adults. It is published by the Manitoba Library Association, every Friday of every week, and is a valuable resource for teachers, librarians, and parents.
- Funk & Wagnalls' VCOT.com stands for 'Virtual Community of Tomorrow' and at this site you'll find the complete unabridged text of the Funk & Wagnalls encyclopedia. Designers have added search capabilities, animations, photos, and historic sound recordings, flags of all nations and more. Articles are updated monthly, making new information and discoveries (like shots of Mars from Pathfinder) available immediately. Additional features include special tools to aid students in writing term papers, an animated ";Cool Facts"; section and a chat room where students and teachers can meet.
- The School Report offers comprehensive information on 12,000 nationwide school districts in nine categories, including SAT scores, child care information, and college admissions - for free. Choose a state and relish browsing over 200 forms of data.

- Judy Blume's Official Web Site - has plenty of content to browse including a personal message from the author, her biography, photos and latest news/announcements. The Kid's section is full of surprising facts (it's here where we came to find out she had to think up the actual story for ";Freckle Juice"; only after dreaming up the title) and there's also plenty of helpful writing tips and important censorship links.
