• The Best Lessons provides original social studies lesson plans developed by wNetSchool Master Teachers.

• The Encarta Lesson Collection is a growing collection of lesson plans and student activity sheets designed by teachers. U.S. teachers who submit their favorite original lesson plans are eligible to win a computer or other prizes.

• The History/Social Studies Web Site offers a wealth of topics, choices, links, resources, lesson plans, and other information for K-12 social studies teachers.

• Dr. Marty Levine's Social Studies Lesson Plans and Resources was compiled by a professor at California State University, Northridge. The site includes teaching strategies and helpful ideas for using the Internet in the social studies classroom. It offers a multi-cultural approach to social studies, including links to topics like African and African-American history, "celebrating diversity," and the Chinese Historical and Cultural Project.

• The Constitution site contains complete text of the Articles of Confederation, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and all subsequent constitutional amendments.

• Thomas -- U.S. Congress on the Internet is a great place to discover what is happening in Congress this week, read major legislation, and scan the Congressional Record.

• The American Studies Web is a list of subjects related to American culture. Created by David Phillips in 1994, it is now part of the American Studies Crossroads Project at Georgetown University.

• The White House for Kids -- with tour guides Socks the cat and Buddy the dog -- features history, kids in the White House, the current president, pets, location, etc. Another section created for the older student has a newsletter and commentary on current topics like the budget and taxes.

• The Kentucky Legislative Research Commission site provides public access to information about General Assembly members and committees, as well as the LRC itself. The service agency for the Kentucky legislature, LRC provides services and publications, many of which are also available here.

• Internet Resources for K-12 Government and Law-Related Education from Social Studies School Service

• Mr. Smith E-Mails Washington provides a graphical interface for sending e-mail to members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives, the president, and the vice president.

• The United States Mission to the United Nations What does the UN do? To find out, visit the United Nations home page.

• Each of the Library of Congress Country Studies deals with a particular nation, describing and analyzing its political, economic, social, and national security systems and institutions and examining the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors.

• The E-Conflict World Encyclopedia profiles the nations of the world. You can look at maps and flags, listen to national anthems, or browse more than 1,500 pages of written text. Test your knowledge with the monthly quiz.

• Flags of all Countries displays full-color flags, arranged alphabetically.

• The Russia Interactive Learning Exhibit explores how changes have affected the former USSR. Visitors can learn about the country through an interactive atlas and explore famous cities by taking a ride on the Continental Railway.

• Six Paths to China has six activities created as models for ways to integrate the web into classroom learning.

• Central Europe Online is an online newspaper for Central European countries that offers headlines, financial data, travel advice, individual country news, and classified ads. This site could easily become a daily check-in point for teachers and students to use for current events, geography, history, or economics lessons.

• Africa Online: Kids Only gives students lots of resources for learning about Africa.

• The U.S. Census Bureau has historic and current population, economic, and business data. One excellent source of international population estimates is the FAO Population database. Another is the United Nations Population Information Network (POPIN) gopher. It contains 1994 population estimates for most of the countries in the world, as well as other files on world population growth, milestones, south-to-north migration flows, and child mortality estimates.

• CNN Newsroom Sign up for daily teacher's guides for the current events program.

• The Using Computers in Social Studies Journal is devoted to promoting the use of computers and related technology in K-12 social studies classrooms.

• UNICEF (the United Nations Children's Fund) has made its journal The State of the World's Children available on the Internet. Included are sections titled Children in War, Anti-War Agenda, Fifty Years for Children, and Regional Spotlight. You'll also find statistical tables dealing with such variables as nutrition, health, education, basic indicators, demographics, and women's status. References and a glossary are provided.

• Amazon Interactive Explore the geography of the Ecuadorian Amazon through online games and activities.

• Little Horus, the first Egyptian web site for kids, contains more than 300 pages of information and illustrations covering Egypt's 7,000 years of civilization. It also gives snapshots of Egypt today, including its economic, cultural, and social life, and gives kids several opportunities to interact with one another.

• The Professor's Postcards are from the UN CyberSchoolBus. The itinerant professor is off again, this time to visit seven world wonders -- all considered among the cultural heritage of humanity -- and will be sending postcards. The problem is that a couple of key words in her postcards always get erased. The cultural and historical detectives will have to figure out where the professor has been by using the visual and textual clues left on the postcard. Geography, history, art, culture, and fun for grades 5-12.

• GeoGame is an online geography guessing game.

• Quick Questions, based on Country at a Glance, is a set of geography questions for classroom use: 37 questions and 37 answers about countries and cities around the world. Try it online, or print it out.

• Helping Your Child Learn Geography is a U.S. Department of Education publication with fun learning activities that can help families teach children the fundamentals of geography.

• The World Factbook 2000, published by the United States Central Intelligence Agency, gives thorough summaries of what appears to be every country in the world. You get a complete rundown of each country's geography; population; government, including governing body and political leaders; economy, including summaries of economic assistance from the UN and from other countries; communications; military establishment; and "transnational issues," -- usually dark topics such as illegal drug traffic or international border disputes.

• World Surfari Take a virtual surfari to a different country every month! Brought to you from the mind of Brian Giacoppo, now age 13.

• National Geographic Magazine Online has current articles and behind-the-scenes peeks into this classic publication. Play an online Geo Bee Quiz.

• Trans Siberian Railroad/Virtual Internet Guide is a new journal and guide to Russia's Trans-Siberian Railroad. It also offers photos of and links to other Russian resources.

• The Geography Education and Technology Program was designed to help Florida teachers.

• Map Collections, 1639-1988 is a search engine for locating thousands of maps and photographs in the online collections of the Library of Congress.

• MapQuest includes the Interactive Atlas, an interactive guide with street maps from all over the world, and TripQuest!, which offers city-to-city driving directions for the continental United States, Canada, and Mexico. Requires free registration.

• The Great Globe Gallery, hosted from Poznan, Poland, is a comprehensive collection of different views of Earth on maps and globes, on satellite images, and in art works.

• Earth Views contains DOZENS of views of the Earth that students will find really cool.
