But all middle and high school students could benefit from a quick look at the frequently confused words section. It lists many of the words young writers are likely to misinterpret.

• Guide to Grammar and Writing Skills Writers will find grammar answers at this comprehensive web site. Clear explanations of key concepts, abundant examples of proper and improper usage, on-line quizzes after every topic, and expert help from "Ask Grammar" make this site an essential resource for wordsmiths everywhere.

• Researchpaper.com is a great starting point for students who are using the web to do research and then write term papers. It offers topics, ideas, and assistance for school-related research projects. The "Idea Directory" connects users to lots of potential topics, and links to Infoseek pull up quick searches related to them.

• Earn a vocabulary degree! Participate in free puzzles designed to enhance vocabulary mastery. The exercises, endorsed by teachers to enrich the classroom curriculum and to help prepare for the SSAT, GED, SAT, and ACT, supplement personal vocabulary acquisition in home-schooling and ESL programs.

• The F. Scott Fitzgerald Centennial Home Page commemorates the 100th anniversary of the writer's birth. This web site offers detailed information on his life, works, and relationships with other authors, including numerous illustrations, a biography and timeline, and complete texts of some of his short stories.

• Word Play offers links to lots of fun, word-related pages.

• KidNews is a children's writing and news service featuring creative work from kids worldwide.

• The Library of Congress (LOC) has organized its digitized American Memory collection in a way designed to fit the needs of students and educators. The new site is called the LOC Learning Page. Resources to help educators incorporate the library's primary sources into their curriculum are provided on the "Educator's Page," along with answers to technical questions about the online materials.

• Children's Literature Web Guide is a wide-ranging repository with references to books, authors, journals, movies, etc. for kids and young adults. Created and maintained by David K. Brown at the University of Calgary.

• The Native American Authors database, part of a project for the Internet Public Library, is a wonderfully detailed and invaluable overview of the contributions to literature made by Native American writers.

• Project Bartleby named for Herman Melville's famous short story "Bartleby, The Scrivener" (1853) seeks to transcribe full-text versions of selected books. Bartleby's 3,000 pages of text represent one of the largest public collections of online literature.

• Focusing on Words is perfect for students and adults wishing to expand their vocabularies.

• The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages

• Language Box At this site, you can learn, practice, or just use and enjoy foreign languages.

• Communications Connections points to lots of resources for a variety of languages, from Latin to Japanese. The site also includes links to destinations for selected languages as well as information on written materials in foreign languages.

• Language Academy and Other Bilingual Programs offers chat rooms and bulletin boards related to ESL and bilingual education. Feel free to visit and contribute. The site also contains lots of other foreign language resources. Java (Navigator 3.0 and above) is required.

• Foreign Language Materials carries materials in Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, and more!

• Integration of WWW Resources in French Language & Instruction, from Portland State University, is a set of educational worksheets (in PDF format) for working with web sites in French, German, and Spanish. For instance, one exercise is to visit a web site in France that lists vacant apartments, while another is to shop in an online store in Germany. (NEH)

• Post-Wall Germany: Integrating Post-Unification German Culture Into the High School Classroom, from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, is a German-language gateway to both German- and English-language sites that pertain to German studies. It is one of several projects of the Department of German Studies at Mount Holyoke College. (NEH)

• InvestSmart, developed by students for the ThinkQuest competition, includes a tutorial on the basics of economics, lessons, a simulation, and examples. In the interactive stock market simulation, each player is given $100,000 to invest and more than 5,000 companies to choose from.

• The Stock Market Game (SMG2000) is an electronic simulation of Wall Street trading designed to help students and adults understand the stock market, the costs and benefits involved in decision making, the sources and uses of capital, and other related economic concepts.

• American Journalism Review's Newslink is the leading trade journal, and this web site is a catch-all for journalists young and old. Students will find links here to more than 3,500 newspapers from around the world, along with scientific polling of the 10 best you can find online. The site includes links to Kentucky newspapers.

• The Write Site, designed for Ohio middle school language arts students, asks students to take the roles of reporters and editors to research, write, and publish their own newspaper. The site includes unit outlines, handouts, exercises, information about how to write, and more.

• Education Cartoons for Teachers, by Randy Glasbergen, offers his cartoons for use in textbooks, school newsletters, and other education projects.

• Online Journalism Projects

• Professional Cartoonists' Index: Teacher's Guide has lesson plans and cartoons to help teachers use editorial cartoons as teaching tools in a variety of disciplines.

• Pictures of the Year presents the best in photojournalism. It is sponsored by the University of Missouri School of Journalism and the National Press Photographers Association.

• LIFE Photos Sixty years ago, LIFE Magazine invented the concept of photojournalism -- telling stories through still images -- and forever changed the nature of both printed news and the photographic image. This site brings that photo storytelling to the web.

• The New York Times has a web site which includes much of the content of the daily newspaper. Domestic users may use the service free of charge after registering.

• The National Center To Improve Practice (NCIP), funded by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs, promotes the effective use of technology to enhance educational outcomes for students with sensory, cognitive, physical, and social/emotional disabilities. The site has an extensive online library of resources about technology and special education, as well as eight facilitated discussion forums. Topics addressed on NCIPnet include everything from the nuts and bolts of various assistive technologies to free-ranging discussions of exclusion/inclusion.

• Special Education Resources on the Internet (SERI) is a collection of Internet-accessible information resources of interest to those involved in fields related to special education.

• The New York Institute for Special Education web site includes the Blindness Resource Center.

• The KET Kids' Health Call-Ins have included information on safety, child development, and asthma. The web site contains links on all of these topics.

• Physical Education Lesson Plans

• PE Central provides the latest information about contemporary developmentally appropriate physical education programs for children and teens.

• America's Promise -- The Alliance for Youth will aid in ensuring that our nation's young people have access to five fundamental resources: a caring adult, a healthy start, safe and structured places, education for marketable skills, and opportunities to serve.

• The mission of Mighty Media is to empower young people, educators, and organizations through the use of interactive communications technology.

• Educators for Social Responsibility provides some tips and guidelines as well as resources and training opportunities to help you work with young people (pre-K through 12) around issues of conflict and diversity.

• Conflict Resolution Web Site lists resources relating to conflict resolution, peer mediation, and peaceable school environments, including reproducible resources, related reference materials, and more.

• Connect for Kids offers guidance for grown-ups on connecting kids and families.

• Band-Aids and Blackboards is designed to help sensitize young schoolchildren to what it's like to grow up with medical problems. Based on research data, it includes strategies of inclusion, links for parents and teachers, and stories of some of the children who participated in the research.

• The Youth In Action Network is an interactive online service for young people, educators, organization members, and classroom teachers who want to learn about, and participate in, positive social action and service projects. Kids and adults worldwide come together to learn about, discuss, and take positive action on issues related to topics such as the environment, human rights, and more.

• The Center for Media Education is a nonprofit organization working to improve the quality of the electronic media on behalf of children, families, nonprofit groups, and the general public. The center's Campaign for Kids' TV is the successor to Action for Children's Television.

• Teacher Talk is published by the Center for Adolescent Studies at the School of Education, Indiana University, Bloomington,IN, for pre-service secondary education teachers. It offers a variety of articles on topics to enhance the social and emotional growth of adolescents.

• On Mapping Your Future, you will find information to help you plan your career, select a school, and pay for your education. This site is sponsored by a group of guaranty agencies who participate in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) and are committed to providing information about higher education and career opportunities.

• Urban Education Web Site The ERIC Clearinghouse on Urban Education has created an Urban Education Web Site. It offers full-text manuals, digests, articles, parents' guides, short bibliographies, directories, and conference announcements. It also has summaries of the best urban education publications in the ERIC database -- the largest educational database in the world. UEweb contains more than 1,000 full-text documents.

• The Kentucky Department of Education's new Commonwealth Diploma Home Page gives information for high school students, teachers, and guidance counselors about the Commonwealth Diploma Program.

• At US News and World Report College Rankings, you can see how schools rate in a variety of detailed categories, search for colleges based on your interests, get information on financing, and find plenty of relevant advice.

• Princeton Review

• CollegeView is a free online college search service with profiles of 3,500+ colleges and universities, virtual tours, electronic application forms, financial aid info, career planning tools, and more.

• CollegePrep 101: A Course To Help Students Prepare for College is designed to prepare students -- and their parents -- for all the changes college life brings. This is must reading for your college-bound high school students. Take the self-directed course at your leisure.

• Educational Testing Service is a a commercial site offering a more complete set of test preparation questions. Certain components are downloadable in .zip files.

• The Trimph Learning page professes to have the most complete online test preparation experience.

• Career Resources is the "ultimate career community resource", offering loads of information on careers, small business, job hunting, working at home, and more. The Birkman Career Style Summary helps identify your interests and style and links to career database profiles that match your interests.

• Project COOL (Career Options On Line) is a multimedia resource for junior and senior high and vo-tech students. Its 644 modules (courses) are organized into 22 major strands, from agriculture to tourism, with links to business and training requirements and mentors for each module.
