Scoring the Essay
If you understand how the GED essay is scored, you will be better prepared to help your students get ready for the essay.
You can also help allay your students fears regarding the readers objectivity.
The GED essay is scored
holisticallythat is, the reader forms an overall impression of the essay and assigns a single score.
In your role as a GED
instructor, you probably read and score essays more
analytically. You identify specific problem areas in an essay, then work with the student to improve his/her writing.
For your students
sake, you need to be able to wear both hatsholistic scorer and
analytical instructor. It is also important that you understand the
differences between the two, so you know when to put on each hat.
