Scoring the Essay

If you understand how the GED essay is scored, you will be better prepared to help your students get ready for the essay. You can also help allay your students’ fears regarding the readers’ objectivity.

The GED essay is scored holistically—that is, the reader forms an overall impression of the essay and assigns a single score.

In your role as a GED instructor, you probably read and score essays more analytically. You identify specific problem areas in an essay, then work with the student to improve his/her writing.

For your students’ sake, you need to be able to wear both hats—holistic scorer and analytical instructor. It is also important that you understand the differences between the two, so you know when to put on each hat.
