The primary concern of the Louisville Zoo is life. The zoo teaches its conservation and practices its protection. The Louisville Zoo strives to achieve the following purposes:
- To exhibit and maintain a diverse collection of animal and plant species.
- To work, as part of both the world-wide and local communities, toward the conservation of life on our planet.
- To utilize the Zoo's resources to educate people and increase their awareness of natural history, conservation issues, interrelationships among living things, responsibilities for preserving life and the impact these issues have on our planet.
- To further the understanding and conservation of life through scientific studies in husbandry, reproduction, behavior and other scientific disciplines. To pursue such studies within our Zoo and in cooperation with other institutions.
- To contribute to the fulfillment of the educational and recreational needs of the state, community and all Zoo visitors by providing a zoological garden which contains natural landscaping and habitats, exotic and native plant and animal collections, and appropriate visitor services.
