1997

  • KET acquires the license of WKPC-15 in Louisville, merges it with the statewide network, and launches a new service, KET2.
  • KET receives the Best Public Television Program of the Year award, two regional Emmys, and the Jesse Stuart Media Award, among other honors.
  • The new KET series In Performance at the Governor’s Mansion showcases Kentucky arts and artists.

  • Street Skills, KET’s teen-oriented safe-driving series, is nominated for a national Emmy in the Community Service category.
  • KET celebrates its 30th anniversary. Businessman Jim Host announces the million-dollar O. Leonard Press 21st Century Fund in honor of KET’s founding director.
  • KET hosts Antiques Roadshow to a crowd of more than 7,000 at Louisville’s Convention Center.
  • Two Kentucky independent productions, Tobacco Blues and If I Can’t Do It, receive national acclaim and distribution.

  • Gov. Paul Patton turns on KET’s—and Kentucky’s—first digital television transmitter, Louisville WKPC-DT, from the Kentucky State Fair.
  • KET tapes public television’s first drama in high definition: American Shorts “The Ryan Interview,” starring Ashley Judd and Eddie Bracken.
  • KET’s Workplace Essential Skills, a series designed to help adults find and keep jobs, is unveiled in September at the National Press Club.
  • KET premieres bookclub@ket, exploring Kentucky books and authors on air and online.
  • KET’s longest-running regular public affairs series, Comment on Kentucky, celebrates its 25th anniversary.
  • KET pilots its first video streaming initiative, covering the Shakertown Roundtable Young Leaders conferences. By combining video, satellite, and computer technology, KET offers a “virtual experience” to those leaders unable to travel to conference sites.
