ARTIST'S STATEMENT My focus is cultural diversity in the arts and using non-Eurocentric art forms to illustrate math elements. I'm finding that blending the curriculum areas of art and math works quite well. For example, I'm using kente cloth patterns to demonstrate the creation of various patterns in math. I also have a side grant I'm very excited about. I'm creating a web site for cultural diversity to access talent from different communities to speak in classrooms about their culture and/or art forms. My goal is to bring more cultural diversity to Kentucky classrooms through art. Let's hear it for art in education! Cynthia Cooke, map-maker

CYNTHIA COOKE has been a guest speaker and artist-in-residence at numerous schools throughout Kentucky and Indiana. She specializes in teaching integrated portfolio projects to students all levels. Cyndi also provides education clinics and summer institutes to minority at-risk students at Louisville's Lincoln Foundation and has taught cartographic techniques in the Geography Department at the University of Louisville. Her other experience includes designing hands-on activities for the Children's Museum of Indianapolis and working as a cartographer for the Defense Mapping Agency in Louisville and in Washington, D.C. Cyndi has a B.A. in geography from the University of Louisville.
