Dance and Community Values

  1. during slavery times

  2. African Americans who were slaves

  3. Any of the following, in the student’s own words:
    • Honesty—Showing the blanket and folding it represents that you are doing what you say you are doing.
    • Care for others’ feelings—handing the blanket to another in a way that shows respect
    • Honoring those who have died—The buzzard lope showed that the people were providing a proper burial for the deceased and not allowing the buzzards to get his or her remains.
    • Playfulness and self-confidence—showing off a “motion” with full energy
    • Respect—copying another’s “motion” as exactly as possible
    • Community—the importance of the community being together in a circle, and of the circle of the community supporting the individuals dancing in the center. The community always supports the individual’s efforts.
