From: Program 13 of Old Music for New Ears
Length: 00:02:06
Description:
Kentucky trio The Reel World String Band performs a vocal call-and-response song in this excerpt from Program 13 of the KET series Old Music for New Ears. The group members also discuss the roots of the song in the African-American tradition of Georgia’s Sea Islands. The series brings top folk and traditional musicians into the studio to perform for a young student audience. Designed to introduce the pure and simple forms of traditional music to today’s generation, the series includes 22 15-minute programs featuring a wide variety of traditional instruments and musical styles.
Suggested uses:
- as an example of vocal call-and-response
- as an example of a cappella performance
- to explore the African-American folk music tradition
- paired with the “Hambone” excerpt to explore body percussion and as a model for creating hand movements to accompany other traditional folk songs
- to compare/contrast to the sing-song speech of modern rap music
- to use with other songs from the series to compare folk music from various cultural backgrounds
- as a good sing-along song
