The Hound Dog Song
From: Program 7 of Old Music for New Ears
Length: 00:02:06
Description:
The Gray Eagle Band, made up of John Harrod, Jane Harrod, and Jim Webb, performs a traditional folk song featuring fiddle, guitar, banjo, and three-part harmony. This Kentucky group performs traditional Kentucky music; the song itself probably originated as a Tin Pan Alley song. This excerpt is from Program 7 of the KET series Old Music for New Ears, which brings top folk and traditional musicians into the studio to perform for a young student audience. Designed to introduce the pure and simple forms of traditional music to today’s generation, the series includes 22 15-minute programs featuring a wide variety of traditional instruments and musical styles.
Suggested uses:
- to demonstrate folk instruments
- to demonstrate three-part harmony
- to demonstrate the verse/chorus form
- as an example of traditional string band music
- to compare folk singing unaccompanied, or a cappella, with songs accompanied by traditional instruments by pairing the Reel World String Band’s “Go Rabbit” performance with “The Hound Dog Song” (Both also make great sing-alongs that can be accompanied with gestures and movements created by students.)
- as part of a lesson or unit about Kentucky culture
