Arts Toolkit: Music

Keep On Movin’ On

Description:

Legendary folk singer Odetta plays guitar and sings a song she wrote about the importance of voting in this excerpt from Program 6 of the KET series Old Music for New Ears. Odetta also discusses music as a way to celebrate cultural diversity. The series brings top folk and traditional musicians into the studio to perform for a young student audience. Designed to introduce the pure and simple forms of traditional music to today’s generation, the series includes 22 15-minute programs featuring a wide variety of traditional instruments and musical styles.

Suggested uses:

  • as an example of contemporary American folk music
  • as part of a discussion of purpose in music (this is a song with a message)
  • to use with a social studies/civics unit or lesson on the responsibilities of citizenship
