Cluck Old Hen/I Had a Rooster
From: Program 5 of Old Music for New Ears
Length: 00:05:01
Description:
Maryland native Mike Seeger plays gourd banjo and modern banjo and sings two traditional Southern folk songs in this excerpt from Program 5 of the KET series Old Music for New Ears. The series brings top folk and traditional musicians into the studio to perform for a young student audience. Designed to introduce the pure and simple forms of traditional music to today’s generation, the series includes 22 15-minute programs featuring a wide variety of traditional instruments and musical styles.
Suggested uses:
- to compare/contrast gourd banjo and modern steel-string banjo
- as examples of traditional American folk music
- as good sing-along songs (“I Had a Rooster” is a good participatory song—students suggest animal verses)
- as part of a study of African-American traditions and contributions (gourd banjo came to America from Africa)
- to compare/contrast with other songs in the series about animals (“Bushy Tail” and “The Hound Dog Song”)
