Length: 00:04:25
Description:
Musician/storyteller Paula Larke plays guitar and sings a song from slavery times in this excerpt from Program 20 of the KET series Old Music for New Ears. The series brings top folk and traditional musicians into the studio to perform for a young student audience. Designed to introduce the pure and simple forms of traditional music to today’s generation, the series includes 22 15-minute programs featuring a wide variety of traditional instruments and musical styles.
Suggested uses:
- as an example of traditional African-American music
- to use in combination with “Gospel Train” from the Old Music series and “Dance in America” from KET’s DanceSense as part of a study of American history/slavery times (the song is about a man whose wife is taken away by slave traders)
- to use with other songs from the series to compare folk music from various cultural backgrounds
- as a good example of music that conveys emotion and mood (this song is a lament)
