Sunrise

From: Program 2 of Creating Stories and Music
Length: 00:04:32

Description:

The Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra performs “Sunrise” from the Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg in this excerpt from Creating Stories and Music Program 2. The segment includes an introduction by Louisville Orchestra Associate Conductor Robert Franz, who explains how Grieg creates the setting of a sunrise by beginning with a few instruments and gradually adding more and more. Creating Stories and Music explores the connections between writing music and writing stories. The series includes three half-hour programs, each of which is divided into two shorter segments. The programs explore character, setting, and conflict and resolution and feature Robert Franz as host, writer George Ella Lyon, composer Lawrence Dillon, and a group of elementary school students.

Suggested uses:

  • to review elements of music
  • to explore the use of tempo and dynamics to create mood in music
  • to use in combination with the “Reminiscence” and “Storm” segments to identify and describe orchestral instrument families
  • to compare writing music and writing stories (creating a setting)
  • paired with other music performances (such as “Storm” and “Reminiscence”) to compare/contrast music from various movements and time periods (e.g., from medieval to contemporary)
  • as a performance excerpt to be analyzed and evaluated using musical terms to describe technical and expressive qualities of the performers/performance (could become a written critique)
