A State Divided: Exploring the Civil War Through Images includes 15 images related to the Civil War in Kentucky, ranging from medals and photographs to portraits and weapons. This sampler was produced as a partnership of the Kentucky Historical Society and KET. The goal is provide images of artworks, artifacts, photographs, and source documents that can be used to teach social studies and arts and humanities.

The images are for educational use by teachers and students;  KHS should be credited when using the images.

A larger collection of images relating to the Civil War in Kentucky will be released in 2012.

Tips for Using

  • On the main gallery page, click on each image to see a larger version of the image.
  • Click on “Read more” under each image on the gallery page for background information, a statement of significance, discussion questions, ideas for use, and links to related resources.
  • On each image’s page, use the Zoomify feature to look at details of the image.
  • A State Divided: Exploring the Civil War Through Images can be used by individual students or in a computer lab, or images can be projected onto a screen or Smartboard for class use.
