Private citizens and businesses invented and manufactured many of the guns used in the Civil War. Sometimes there were shortages. This rifle was invented by Louis Triplett of Columbia, Kentucky. It is a repeater rifle. That means it could hold more than one bullet at a time and soldiers could fire more shots more quickly. Kentucky wanted to arm soldiers to protect Union supply lines, so it ordered some of these guns. But by the time the guns arrived the war was over.
