John Hunt Morgan's Command Autograph Book, 1863

6 1/2" x 9" x 1"

This book belonged to Ephraim W. McLean, a Confederate captain. He collected these autographs while he was in prison in Ohio. He and his fellow prisoners were some of John Hunt Morgan’s “raiders.” Autograph books recorded who a solider met. They were similar to today's address books. Many men included their name, rank, and hometown when they signed a book. This helped soldiers stay in touch with each other after the war. Sometimes, soldiers would also write a personal note or poem or draw in the books.
