This engraving shows Kentucky Senator Henry Clay speaking to the United States Senate. Clay was a lawyer and a leading politician of the time. Clay worked to avoid the Civil War, and he was known as “The Great Compromiser.” In this drawing, he is speaking about the Compromise of 1850. It delayed the war by helping both slave and free states.
