Dessert Spoon with Lynching Scene, 1902

2 1/4" x 8"

This silver spoon is engraved with an image of a man being lynched in front of a courthouse. The man is Tom Brown, a black man who was accused of attacking a woman. Before police could take him to jail, a mob captured him and hanged him. This kind of violence was common in Kentucky after the Civil War. Some whites blamed the hard times and poverty on the freed slaves. Many murders, shootings, rapes, and other crimes were committed against African Americans.
