Scherenschnitte

Scherenschnitte is German for “scissor cutting” or “scissor clipping.” It is a style of paper artwork. This piece was created to mourn a young Union soldier who was killed in battle. During and after the war, Americans followed many rules when mourning. Women in mourning wore only black and stayed in their homes for months or even years. But soon these expensive and difficult practices began to fade away.
