1944:

The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City hosts its first jazz concert; performers include Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton (a Kentucky native), Artie Shaw, Roy Eldridge, and Jack Teagarden.

1995:

In southern France, near Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, paintings and engravings dating back 17,000-20,000 years old are found in a network of caves.
