American Trappist monk and writer Thomas Merton is born in France. He will write 50 books, including No Man Is an Island and The Seven Storey Mountain, while living and working at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Nelson County, Kentucky.

1937:

American minimalist composer Philip Glass, known for film scores as well as concert works, is born in Baltimore, Maryland.
