Polish pianist Arthur Rubinstein, acclaimed for his performances of Chopin, is born in Lodz, Poland.

1960:

African-American Harlem Renaissance writer Zora Neale Hurston dies and is buried in an unmarked grave. In 1973, author Alice Walker will give the grave a marker.
