Actor Edwin Booth opens his new theater in New York City; its first production is Romeo and Juliet.

1959:

Rock ’n’ roll pioneers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper die in a plane crash en route to a gig. The day will become known as “The Day the Music Died.”
