This Day in the Arts: February 14

The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde’s last play, is performed for the first time, in London.

February 14 is the anniversary of the birth of American entertainer Gregory Hines. Hines was born in 1946 in New York.

Though he was an acclaimed singer and actor (he won a Tony Award as best actor in a musical in 1992 for his portrayal of Jelly Roll Morton) to many, Hines is most recognized as a dancer.

During the 1980s and '90s, he personified the art of tap dance, not only as a visually elegant performer but as a tireless advocate for the art form. Hines died in 2003.

You can find out more about him at the American Dance Legends web site.
