Irish playwright, novelist, and poet Samuel Beckett is born. Two of his major plays are Waiting for Godot and Endgame; he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1969.

1980:

Grease, one of the longest running Broadway musicals, closes after eight years and 3,388 performances.
