Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony, the “Eroica” (Italian for “heroic”), is performed publicly for the first time, in Vienna.

1949:

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific opens on Broadway. It will run for 1,925 performances and win nine Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize.
