Harriet Beecher Stowe’s serialized novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin starts a ten-month run in the National Era, an abolitionist newspaper.

1898:

Federico Garcia Lorca, a Spanish poet and playwright, is born; he was murdered at age 38 by Nationalists at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.
