Josiah Wedgwood, an English potter credited with the industrialization of the manufacturing of pottery, is born. He is also remembered today as the grandfather of Charles Darwin.

1904:

Chilean poet Pablo Neruda is born. Extremely prolific and diverse, he would be awarded the 1971 Nobel Prize for literature.
