1942:

Groundbreaking Russian choreographer Michel Fokine, who staged more than 70 ballets in the U.S. and Europe, dies in New York.

2004:

Two of Edvard Munch’s paintings, The Scream and Madonna, are stolen at gunpoint from a museum in Oslo, Norway. They have not yet been recovered.
