Man Ray, an American painter and photographer and a leading figure in the artistic avant-garde in Paris of the 1920s, is born in Philadelphia.

1963:

Having renounced his U.S. citizenship earlier in the year, African-American scholar and civil rights activist W.E.B. du Bois dies in Ghana at the age of 95.
