George Gershwin, an American composer whose musicals and popular songs are among the finest in their genres and whose compositions in art-music forms are infused with the idioms of jazz and popular music, is born.

1957:

West Side Story opens on Broadway, featuring music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It will run for 732 performances.
