John Cage, an experimental composer and leading figure of the avant-garde for more than half a century, is born in Los Angeles.

1957:

Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road, based on his friendship with Neal Cassidy, is published. It will become one of the best known works of the Beat Generation.
