Alfred Nobel, an inventor and the founder of the Nobel Prize, is born in Stockholm, Sweden.

1917:

American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, singer, and composer Dizzy Gillespie is born. Along with Charlie Parker, he will become a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz.
