Alfred Tennyson is appointed Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom. One of Tennyson’s most famous works today is Idylls of the King, a series of narrative poems based on tales of King Arthur.

1998:

Vincent Van Gogh’s painting Portrait of the Artist Without Beard sells for $71.5 million at auction.
