Egyptian novelist and screenplay writer Naguib Mahfouz, the first Arabic writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, is born in Cairo.

1918:

Russian writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is born. He will receive the Nobel Prize in literature in 1970.
