Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author John Steinbeck dies in New York. He is known for his novella Of Mice and Men as well as the novels The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden.


The position of Poet Laureate of the United States is established. A poet laureate is a poet officially appointed by a government who is often expected to compose poems for state occasions and other government events.
