Background on Matisse

Making a Collage in the Style of Matisse

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) is often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. He pursued the expressiveness of color throughout his career and is sometimes called “The Master of Color.”

Later in life, he became ill. Too weak to stand at his easel, he started making cut-paper collages. He published a book of these collages, Jazz, in 1947. Matisse’s collages of the circus and other scenes are among his most famous works. He described the collage technique as “drawing with scissors.”
