Louisville street scene

Louisville—A City at the Falls combines three black-and-white documentaries about the city’s early history. A Time Remembered, Those Were the Days, and The Endless Wait were directed by Louisville filmmaker Al Shands and originally broadcast on Louisville’s WAVE-TV in the 1970s. Recovered and restored by KET, the films air together in a special 90-minute presentation.

Covering the period between 1850 and 1940, the three documentaries collectively recall the history of the River City from its boom in the mid-19th century to its dramatic bust in the Great Depression and its trial by water in the legendary Ohio River flood of 1937. After coming across two- and three-minute clips from the films at the University of Kentucky, KET producer Aaron Hutchings contacted Shands and learned that the filmmaker had stored full copies in the basement of his Louisville home. KET cleaned and digitally remastered the films from their original 16mm reels. The result is a fascinating look at the development of Kentucky’s largest urban center.
