Columbus-Belmont Battlefield

(#715) from Kentucky Life Program 715 (2001)

A visit to Columbus-Belmont Battlefield on the Mississippi River shore in Hickman County. In 1861, Columbus, KY and the Missouri town of Belmont, across the river, were the site of one of the first Civil War battles for new Union commander Ulysses S. Grant. The fighting was precipitated by a Confederate attempt to block off the river by stretching a giant chain across it.
