Fluorspar Mining History

(#1317) from Kentucky Life Program 1317 (2007)

Host Dave Shuffett visits the Clement Mineral Museum in Crittenden County to learn about the history of mining fluorspar in the region. Fluorspar (or fluorite), a soft mineral formed by fluorine gas and calcium, is a key to the process of refining iron ore into steel, and its extraction was a major Western Kentucky industry from the 1890s through the early 1940s.
