Kentucky's long history of growing tobacco is reflected in the state's health statistics: We lead the nation in the number of adult and teenaged smokers per capita and in lung cancer deaths per capita. Efforts to reduce those numbers include the Tobacco Free Academy, a free program for 4th through 6th graders in Ashland and Boyd County; the 12-week, science-based Cooper-Clayton Method To Stop Smoking; and anti-smoking ordinances in several communities.
