Science Hill Female Academy

(#1303) from Kentucky Life Program 1303 (2007)

Alumnae Ruby Dean Allen, Martha O’Nan, and Rosella Davis remember life at Science Hill Female Academy in Shelbyville. Founded in 1825 by Julia Ann Tevis in order to teach subjects like science and history that were not usually offered to young ladies in the 19th century, Science Hill later became a prestigious college preparatory academy before closing in 1939.

Trouble with video in Firefox:

This is a known issue with the Window Media Video format.

Windows Media plugin is no longer maintained in Firefox, causing it to stop working.

Solution: Change the Firefox configuration file.
  1. Open a new tab or window.
In the "Location/URL" bar, type "about:config" and press Enter.
(The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page will appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page.)
  2. In the "about:config" page search bar, enter:
    "plugins.load_appdir_plugins"
  3. Double click the preference name to change the "value" to true.
  4. Close and restart Firefox. The video should now work once you reopen the page.
If not, then the WMV plugin may not be installed.
