First up on this episode of Mixed Media, we’ll take a look at life from a bug’s perspective with nature photographer Tom Myers, an artist who likes to work up close with his insect subjects. We will discuss the love of nature, animals, and insects that drives his unique photographic style as he attempts to reveal the hidden details of an even smaller world.

Next, we’ll visit with Walter Cornelison, the fifth generation of his family to own and operate Bybee Pottery. Named for its small hometown in the hills of southern Madison County, Bybee is the oldest existing pottery manufacturer west of the Alleghenies. Walter explains that the process Bybee artisans use to mine the local clay, grind it in the antique pug mill, and throw and shape it by hand is very much the same today as it was more than a century ago. The resulting handsome and durable wares have been in demand since the middle of the 19th century.

Our first musical guest on the show is a man of many talents: internationally known author, musician, storyteller, teacher, and master drummer Yaya Diallo. A native of Mali, West Africa, Yaya currently teaches at Bellarmine University. Constantly composing new work, performing, teaching, and lecturing, the skilled percussionist has earned his reputation as a genuine custodian of West African music and culture.

We’ll conclude tonight’s episode with a jazz performance from Louisville’s Ochion Jewell Quartet. Led by tenor saxophonist Ochion (pronounced ‘Ocean’) Jewell, the group will play a selection from their debut album Still Life, a mixture of traditional and modern jazz sounds, inspired by Latin, funk, and classical music.
