Born in Western Kentucky, Jefferson Davis spends his boyhood in Rosemont, MS and then is schooled in Lexington and at West Point. After enduring the tragic loss of his first wife, Sarah Knox Taylor, he blazes a political path that leads him to Washington as a Mississippi representative in Congress. He marries Varina Howell, enters the Mexican War, and returns a hero. He is appointed to the Senate but leaves Washington in 1851 to run for governor of Mississippi. In 1861, he leaves his second term with the stirrings of secession.
