Rev. Dr. Kevin W. Cosby, St. Stephen Church

Since 1979, Rev. Dr. Kevin W. Cosby has served as senior pastor of St. Stephen Church in Louisville. Under his leadership, the church has grown from 500 to approximately 10,000 members and has been recognized by Outreach magazine as one of the top 100 largest churches in America and by Emerge magazine as one of the six “super churches” of the South.

Once the “little church on the corner,” St. Stephen is now a multi-faceted institution that includes a 1,700-seat worship center, a cutting-edge $4 million inner-city family life center, and a 1,000-seat satellite church in Jeffersonville, IN. In 1998, Cosby encouraged the church to purchase and convert the original four-acre campus of Simmons University, once home to the oldest African-American educational institution in the state of Kentucky, to be used as a lifestyle enrichment campus.

In 2005, Cosby was also chosen as the 13th president of Simmons Bible College, now Simmons College of Kentucky.

A staunch proponent of education, Cosby earned a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, a Master of Divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH. He subsequently assumed administrative and teaching assignments at Kentucky State University, the University of Louisville, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and United Theological Seminary. His oratorical skills have also led to lecturing engagements at Harvard and other universities and institutions around the world.

Cosby is also the author of several highly acclaimed books: Get Off Your But! Messages, Musings & Ministries To Empower the African-American Church, As They Went, Treasure Worth Seeking, and Who’s Your Daddy: Life Lessons from the Prodigal Son. He has been the subject of many national articles and documentaries, which consistently list him among the most powerful and influential leaders in the state of Kentucky.

He is married to the former Barnetta Turner, and they are the proud parents of two adult children.
