Blue Dog Bakery & Cafe

Opened in 1998, Blue Dog Bakery and Cafe, which occupies a double storefront at 2868 Frankfort Ave. in Louisville, Ky., has been baking European-style artisanal bread for Louisvillians. The business is owned by couple and entrepreneurs Bobby Hancock and Kit Garrett.

This Crescent Hill neighborhood hot spot includes a wood-fired brick baking oven from Spain and a larger oven from Italy, which can accommodate 144 baguettes in its eight decks.

Initially opened solely as a bakery, Blue Dog expanded to the space next door and opened a cafe. The cafe serves an array of soups, salads and sandwiches, which highlight Blue Dog breads and has received rave reviews for its weekend brunch.

The small business is named after “Blue,” the late Australian Blue Heeler Bobby and Kit owned for 17 years.

Bobby is a trained breadmaker, who garnered his skills in New York, California and Washington state in the 1990s. He still maintains many of the technical aspects of breadmaking for Blue Dog.
