Downtown Bike Racks

Take a walk around downtown Louisville and you’ll run into a cow, some Stone Age figures, and some twisted pieces of metal. Worth a second look as pieces of art, they’re also quite functional—they’re bike racks.

In 2001, the Louisville Downtown Management District took a creative approach to bringing more public art to downtown sidewalks by hiring local artists to create fun variations on the bicycle rack. The artists received only $2,000 each to produce the pieces, including materials. But in return, they got a public “exhibition space” guaranteeing that thousands of people will see their work.

The LDMD web site has a map of the bike rack locations and information on all the artists.
