Did you know that 90% of the United States’ disco balls are made in Louisville? National Products Inc. on Baxter Avenue has been turning them out for more than 50 years.
Although most often associated with the disco era of the 1970s, disco balls—also known as mirror balls or ball mirrors—have actually been around a lot longer. In fact, you can spot one in the 1942 movie classic Casablanca.
National Products’ primary business is manufacturing wood kitchen cabinetry and antique reproduction mirrors. But you’ll also find its disco balls and other lighting effect products all over the world. Two unusual examples are the largest mirror ball on Earth, located in the United Kingdom and measuring 20 feet in diameter, and the saddle-shaped “ball” at Coyote’s at O’Malley’s Corner in downtown Louisville.
