For many people, one of the things that makes the holiday season special is stoking reminiscences. Our holiday trip down memory lane includes a trip back to a bustling Fourth Street shopping district and a look at Clifton through the eyes of an early 20th-century Christmas card artist.
The Filson Historical Society has a collection of vintage holiday cards produced by the artist in question, long-time Clifton resident Harold Frantz. The web site has information about the society, its collections, and membership.
The Fourth Street memories we spotlighted are courtesy of Jerry Rice, writer-director of the documentary Fourth Street: Louisville’s Street of Yesterdays. VHS copies are available for sale at select Borders stores; at Schimpff’s Confectionery and the Howard Steamboat Museum in Jeffersonville, IN; or from producer Tim Young. E-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
Schimpff’s has itself been part of local holiday memories for more than a century. In addition to turning out sweet treats, these legendary candy makers operate a museum at their Spring Street location.
